Fence And Other Trades Worried About Theft

I came across this story about $12000.00 worth of chain link fencing being stolen, and it peaked my interest. As the owner of a company that sells and installs fences in the Raleigh, NC. and surrounding areas, this has become more and more of a problem for all trades. Of course, I have been more concerned about the higher end fencing like the aluminum fence, or PVC and vinyl fence being stolen and have been careful not to leave any sitting around on projects in plain site.

ROCHESTER — Police are investigating a report of a theft of about $12,000 worth of chain-link fence from the Gonic Brickyard.

Deputy Chief Mike Allen said police received the report Aug. 8, indicating about 330 feet of fence had been stolen from the brickyard. Allen said the price to purchase and install a chain-link fence is between $30 and $38 per foot.

"We are still following up on it. They are checking with some of the scrapyards to see if anyone has tried to unload some chain-link fence recently," Allen said Monday. He noted the theft is believed to have occurred sometime in July.

The theft is considered a Class A felony, as the value of the good stolen exceeds $1,000.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Rochester Crimeline at 335-6500. Crimeline callers remain anonymous.

330′ of chain link fence is worth $12k? I am a little skeptical of that, and it didn’t say, but since the cost included installation, did the thieves actually steal fence that had already installed!? I would like to know further details on that myself. Ironically, if the fence was stolen after installation, the purpose of the installation of a fence would be for added security!

At any rate, this is what I and many other contractors, in many other trades, have to deal with on a daily basis, not only do fuel prices and cost of manufacturing affect the price of our services, but theft can drive prices as well. As we are all dealing with a struggling economy, and we (I know Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC is) are all trying our best to keep prices reasonable, theft will only make it worse.

Here in the Triangle area of North Carolina, most of the chain link fences Raleigh Fence Contractors, LLC. offers for installation is under $20per ft. and some can be under $15per ft. depending on height and type of chain link. Most wood privacy installations run between $15-$20per ft. installed, also depends on height and style. The basic styles of black ornamental aluminum fencing we install runs between $20-$25per ft, and the PVC, and vinyl fences can run as high as $35per ft.

I cannot guarantee the prices will stay the same as most materials have risen several times over the summer, and I never know when another price increase will come from my suppliers, but as of August 13, 2008, those prices are accurate.
